Open any green Pakistani passport to the third page and you'll find a sentence printed on no document of most of its neighbours: "This passport is valid for all countries of the world except Israel." Because Pakistan does not recognise the Jewish state, that single legally binding line bars its 240-million citizens from one specific destination by design, not by visa rules. The clause has survived every redesign, including the 29-security-feature e-passport rolled out from 2024, where officials confirmed all existing text was kept intact. Few passports on earth carry a worldwide travel ban written into their own pages.

• Refugee host Pakistan has long been one of the world's largest hosts of Afghan refugees, sheltering between roughly 1.6 and 3 million people from across the border in 2024.
