Mongolia is the only nation on Earth whose capital averages a sub-zero temperature year-round: in Ulaanbaatar the annual mean sits around -1 to -2 C, with January nights plunging past -35 C, making it the coldest national capital in the world. That extreme is matched by an extreme of emptiness. Mongolia is the least densely populated sovereign country on the planet, with roughly 3.4 million people spread across 1.56 million square kilometres, and around 30 percent still living as nomads.
