A document photo is a headache of its own

A Hungary Student ID photo has strict requirements, and a mistake costs time and money. We’ll show you how to pass on the first try.

      It gets rejected

Wrong size, background or cropping — and the system returns the application.

      Expensive and slow

A trip to a photo studio means a queue, time and €7–12 for a reshoot.

      Confusing requirements

Exact size, head height, light background, facial expression — easy to get wrong.

      Redo it all over

Rejected — take another photo, pay and submit again. Round and round.

      In detail

Your Student ID photo: what matters

A correctly prepared photo is the single most common sticking point when registering a Hungarian student ID (diákigazolvány). The photo is recorded onto the NEK adatlap (National Register data sheet) at a Kormányablak service window — the same biometric standard used for Hungarian national ID cards applies here: 35×45 mm, a strictly specified light-grey background, and precise facial framing. Submit a photo that deviates even slightly and your registration is delayed until you return with a conforming image.

What makes Hungary's student-ID photo stand out from a generic document photo is the background specification. Hungarian authorities require a uniform light-grey background (approximately #E6E6E6 in hex). Plain white, cream, or any coloured backdrop — all common in portrait studios abroad — are rejected at the Kormányablak desk. On-site digital capture at the Kormányablak photo station is the default process, but a self-supplied printed or digital photo that meets the full technical standard is officially accepted. This means having a pixel-perfect, colour-accurate file ready in advance saves an extra trip to the government office.

      • Size: 35 × 45 mm (equivalent to 827 × 1063 px at 600 dpi)
      • Background: uniform light grey — hex #E6E6E6; no gradients, shadows, or patterns
      • Face height: 70–80% of the total frame height, centred
      • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, eyes open and looking directly at the lens
      • Glasses: not permitted in any form
      • Head coverings: permitted only for documented religious reasons
      • Recency: photo must reflect your current appearance (taken within the last 6 months)
      • Lighting: even, no harsh shadows on face or background
      • Common reasons photos are rejected at Hungarian Kormányablak offices:
      • Background is white or off-white instead of the required light grey — the most frequent rejection cause for self-supplied photos
      • Glasses present (even thin-framed or lightly tinted); prescription glasses are not an exception under Hungarian biometric rules
      • Face too small or too large — less than 70% or more than 80% of the frame height, often caused by using a general portrait crop
      • Uneven lighting creating a shadow gradient across the background, making the grey appear non-uniform

To get a photo that clears the Kormányablak check on the first attempt: upload any clear, front-facing photograph and our tool automatically crops it to the exact 35×45 mm frame, corrects the background to the required light grey (#E6E6E6), and scales the face to the 70–80% specification. You receive a free watermarked preview before any payment — inspect every detail before you commit. And if your photo is somehow rejected by the issuing authority, we will redo it at no charge or refund you in full. You pay only for the final, compliant file.

      How we get it right

How we make your Student ID photo meet the official standard — Hungary, 35 × 45 mm

Every photo is prepared against the official requirements for your document — not a generic template. Here is what that means in practice:

      • 1We crop and size your photo to the exact millimetre and pixel dimensions the authority requires.
      • 2We check the background, head position, gaze and lighting, and flag glasses or head coverings that are not allowed.
      • 3We match the rules to the specific document and country, against the exact format requirements.
      • 4If anything does not meet the standard, you get a free re-do or your money back.

      No more doubts

A digital photo is normal, and it gets accepted — Hungary, 35 × 45 mm

You do not need a trip to a studio. Authorities accept any Student ID photo that meets the official requirements — what matters is the standard, not where the photo was made. We match that standard exactly.

      The standard is what counts

Officials check your photo against the rules — size, background, head position and lighting — not where you took it.

      Part of official processes

Many passport, visa and ID services let you upload a digital photo or submit a print — both are fine when they meet the spec.

      Same result as a studio

We prepare your file to the exact official measurements, so it is accepted just like a professional studio photo.

      And you are covered

If a photo is ever rejected for not meeting the requirements, we redo it for free or refund you.

Common questions about Hungary Student ID photos

What size must a Hungarian student ID (diákigazolvány) photo be?
The required size is 35 × 45 mm, which corresponds to 827 × 1063 pixels at 600 dpi — the same biometric standard used for Hungarian national ID cards.
What background colour is required for a Hungarian student ID photo?
A uniform light grey background is required (approximately hex #E6E6E6). White, cream, or any coloured background will be rejected at the Kormányablak office.
Can I wear glasses in my Hungarian student ID photo?
No. Glasses of any kind — including prescription glasses, thin frames, or lightly tinted lenses — are not permitted under the Hungarian biometric document-photo standard.
What is the NEK adatlap and why does it matter for my student ID photo?
The NEK adatlap (National Register data sheet) is the official form used at Kormányablak service windows to register your diákigazolvány. Your photo is recorded directly onto this form, so it must match the biometric specification exactly before the clerk can proceed.
Can I supply my own photo instead of using the Kormányablak photo station?
Yes. A self-supplied photo that meets the full technical standard — correct size, light-grey background, proper facial framing, no glasses — is officially accepted. Having a ready, compliant file avoids an extra trip.
Do I pay before I see the result, and what happens if my photo is rejected?
No upfront payment. You receive a free watermarked preview first. Pay only when you are satisfied. If the issuing authority still rejects the photo, we redo it free of charge or issue a full refund — no questions asked.
