Did you know? Estonia
In 2014, a Tallinn ceremony handed a credit-card-sized chip to a foreigner who had never set foot in Estonia as a resident, launching e-Residency, the first government-issued transnational digital identity on Earth. It let anyone, anywhere, run an EU company and legally sign documents online, an extension of a system that has issued chip-based ID cards to Estonian citizens since 2002. The same digital backbone made Estonia the first country to hold binding nationwide internet voting in a 2005 election, where today roughly half of all ballots are cast online. For a passport service, Estonia is the rare place where your identity document is also your remote-control to the state.
- Passport power On the 2025 Henley Passport Index, Estonia's passport ranked 9th in the world, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 186 destinations, the same reach as the United States.
- Digital identity Estonia was the first nation to offer e-Residency, a transnational digital ID launched in 2014 that lets non-citizens who may never visit the country open and run an EU business entirely online.
- ID cards Estonians have carried chip-embedded national ID cards since 2002, used to sign legally binding documents, file taxes, and access nearly every public service over the internet.
- Online voting In 2005 Estonia became the first country in the world to run binding nationwide internet voting in a real election, and today around half of all votes are cast online.
- Currency Estonia's old kroon, reintroduced in 1992 and named from the Latin 'corona' (crown), was split into 100 senti and was famously pegged to the German mark before Estonia became the first Baltic state to adopt the euro on 1 January 2011.
- Statehood Legally, the Republic of Estonia has existed continuously since it declared independence on 24 February 1918, a claim of unbroken statehood maintained through decades of Soviet occupation.
- Human chain On 23 August 1989, around two million Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians joined hands in the Baltic Way, an unbroken human chain stretching roughly 675 km from Tallinn to Vilnius to demand freedom from Soviet rule.
- Record skyline Tallinn's St Olaf's Church is believed to have been the tallest building in the world from 1549 to 1625, towering over one of Europe's best-preserved medieval old towns.
- Demographics As of 1 January 2025 Estonia counted 1,369,995 people, with ethnic Russians the largest minority at about 21 percent, concentrated in Tallinn and the northeastern Ida-Viru region.
