Cameroon owes its very name to a passport-stamp accident of geography: in 1472, Portuguese sailors led by Fernão do Pó sailed into the Wouri estuary, found it swarming with ghost shrimp, and called it Rio dos Camarões, "river of prawns." The label crept inland from river to coast to colony, and an entire nation ended up named after a crustacean. Centuries later that same coast became one of Africa's most documented identity puzzles: a single country welded from British and French territories in 1961, stamping passports in two colonial languages and printing money in four. Few states carry their history so openly in their travel papers.
- Passport power In the August 2025 Henley Passport Index, Cameroon's passport ranked 84th, opening just 49 destinations visa-free or visa-on-arrival, among the weaker travel documents in Africa.
- Passport design Because Cameroon belongs to the Central African monetary zone, its biometric passport is engraved with the CEMAC emblem on the cover, marking it as a regional, not purely national, travel document.
- Biometric ID Cameroon was the first CEMAC state to issue CEMAC-standard biometric passports, and under a 2020 contract overhauled the system to deliver a laser-engraved polycarbonate passport in as little as 48 hours instead of months.
- Citizenship Cameroon bans dual nationality outright: under article 31 of the 1968 nationality code, any adult Cameroonian who voluntarily acquires a foreign citizenship automatically loses their Cameroonian one.
