Tucked onto the island of Borneo, tiny Brunei punches far above its size in the world of money and documents. For more than half a century its dollar has been twins with Singapore's: under a 1967 agreement the two currencies still swap at par, with no fee, in shops and banks of both nations. And until 2020 Brunei printed the B$10,000 note, widely cited as the most valuable banknote in regular circulation anywhere on Earth, worth roughly US$7,500. That single sheet of paper could be spent at face value in Singapore too, a quirk of monetary union almost unmatched in the modern world.

• Passport power On the Henley Passport Index 2025 the Brunei passport ranked 18th globally, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to around 168 destinations, the third-strongest passport in Southeast Asia after Singapore and Malaysia.
• Currency twins Under the 1967 Brunei-Singapore Currency Interchangeability Agreement, the Brunei dollar and Singapore dollar are accepted at par in both countries with no exchange charge, meaning Singapore banknotes circulate freely in Brunei and vice versa.
• Record banknote Until it halted printing in 2020 to curb money laundering, Brunei issued a B$10,000 note, regularly cited as the most valuable banknote in circulation on the planet, worth about US$7,500.
• Money origins The Brunei dollar, divided into 100 sen, was launched on 12 June 1967 to replace the old Malaya and British Borneo dollar, and switched to forgery-resistant polymer notes in 2004.
• Citizenship Brunei's nationality law is built on descent, and stateless residents, including many third-generation ethnic Chinese, must pass a famously hard Malay language and culture test, with some waiting years for citizenship even after passing.
• Longest reign Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah, on the throne since 5 October 1967, became the world's longest-reigning living monarch of a sovereign state, heir to a dynasty that has ruled Brunei for more than 600 years.
• Statehood Brunei was a British protectorate from 1888 and only became fully independent on 1 January 1984, making it one of the youngest sovereign states despite one of the world's oldest continuously ruling royal houses.
• Largest palace The Sultan's official residence, Istana Nurul Iman, holds the Guinness World Record as the largest residential palace on Earth, with 1,788 rooms, 257 bathrooms and a banquet hall for 5,000 guests.
• Award design Brunei's polymer $100 note won a gold medal for its security features at Australia's 22nd National Print Award in May 2005, a rare honour for a national banknote.
