• Currency age The pound sterling is the world's oldest currency still in use, with silver pennies traced to around 775 AD under King Offa of Mercia — over 1,200 years of continuous circulation.
• Decimal Day Until 15 February 1971 — "Decimal Day" — the pound was divided into 240 pence, with 12 pence to a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound; overnight Britain switched to 100 new pence.
