Tonga is the only Pacific island nation never colonized by a European power, and that unbroken sovereignty is written into its documents. King George Tupou I unified the islands and proclaimed a written constitution on 4 November 1875 — the first in the Pacific — then secured treaties with Germany, Britain and the United States recognizing Tonga as an independent state. That 1875 charter still governs identity today: land cannot be sold to foreigners, and even naturalized citizens are barred from the hereditary land allotments every Tongan-born male may claim.
