Russia recognizes only one nation on Earth whose citizens may legally hold its passport alongside their own: Tajikistan. A treaty signed on 7 September 1995 lets Tajiks carry both a Tajik and a Russian passport simultaneously, an exclusive arrangement no other country shares. Everyone else who holds a Russian passport plus a foreign one is treated as Russian-only on Russian soil. That single document quirk turned millions of Tajik labor migrants into legal dual nationals, and even as Russian lawmakers floated scrapping the deal in 2025, it still stood, a rare passport privilege written into law.

• Dual citizenship Tajikistan is the only country with which Russia maintains a formal dual-citizenship treaty, signed on 7 September 1995, letting holders legally carry both passports at once.
• Passport power On the 2025 Henley Passport Index the Tajik passport ranked 87th, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to just 55 destinations after falling six places from the prior year.
• Currency name The somoni is named after Ismail Samani, the 9th-century founder of the Samanid Empire whose face also appears on the 100-somoni banknote.
• Redenomination When the somoni launched on 30 October 2000 it swapped out the old Tajikistani ruble at a brutal rate of 1 somoni to 1,000 rubles, erasing the inflation of the 1990s.
• First coins The diram coins issued in 2001 were the first circulating coins minted in Tajikistan since it became independent in 1991.
• Engineering record The 300-metre Nurek Dam on the Vakhsh River held the title of world's tallest dam for over three decades and still ranks as the tallest embankment dam ever built.
• Highest peak Tajikistan's Ismoil Somoni Peak (7,495 m) was once the highest point of the entire Soviet Union and has been renamed three times, from Stalin Peak to Communism Peak to its present name.
• Ancient roots The proto-urban settlement of Sarazm, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Panjakent, dates back roughly 5,500 years, making it one of the oldest towns in Central Asia.
• Statehood Modern Tajik statehood traces to 5 December 1929, when the Tajik SSR was carved out of Uzbekistan, before the country declared full independence on 9 September 1991.
