Open a South African banknote and you are holding the only currency on Earth named after a gold-bearing ridge: the rand takes its name from the Witwatersrand, the 56-kilometre reef near Johannesburg where the world's richest gold deposits were unearthed. Since 2012 every note carries Nelson Mandela's smiling portrait on the front and one of the Big Five animals on the back, a series South Africans affectionately nicknamed the 'Randela'. It made Mandela the first Black person to appear on the nation's money, turning a unit named for a mining ridge into a daily reminder of the country's reinvention.

• Human origins The Sterkfontein caves in the 'Cradle of Humankind' hold the world's richest trove of early-human fossils; recent dating put some Australopithecus remains at 3.4 to 3.6 million years old, a million years older than once thought.
• Medical first On 3 December 1967 surgeon Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant at Cape Town's Groote Schuur Hospital.
• Migration South Africa's 2022 census counted over 2.4 million international migrants, with Zimbabweans the largest group at about 45.5% of the foreign-born population.
