On Valentine's Day 1972, miners working an alluvial pit near Koidu in eastern Sierra Leone pulled a 968.9-carat rough diamond from the gravel — the Star of Sierra Leone, the largest alluvial diamond ever found and, at the time, one of the biggest gem diamonds on record. It was eventually cut into 17 polished stones, 13 of them flawless. That single find captures the paradox of a small West African republic whose name a Portuguese sailor borrowed from "Lion Mountains" in 1462, and whose capital sits on what is reckoned the third-largest natural harbour on Earth — a country far more storied than its size suggests.
- Diamonds The 968.9-carat Star of Sierra Leone, dug from a Koidu pit on 14 February 1972, remains the largest alluvial diamond ever discovered and was cut into 17 gems, 13 of them flawless.
- The name "Sierra Leone" comes from the Portuguese Serra Lyoa, or "Lion Mountains," coined by explorer Pedro de Sintra in 1462 for the peaks behind today's Freetown.
- Harbour Freetown's deep-water bay is widely ranked the third-largest natural harbour in the world, a fact that shaped the city's founding and naval history.
- Passport In the 2025 Henley Passport Index the Sierra Leonean passport ranked 76th of 199, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to around 66 destinations.
- Currency The leone was introduced in 1964, replacing the British West African pound at two leones to the pound, and is divided into 100 cents.
- Redenomination On 1 July 2022 the Bank of Sierra Leone lopped three zeros off the leone — 1,000 old leones (SLL) became one new leone (SLE) — to cut the cost and risk of hauling vast stacks of cash.
- Freed settlers Freetown was founded as a haven for liberated people of African descent; in 1792 some 1,100 freed settlers arrived, giving rise to the Krio community and language.
- Lingua franca Although English is the official language, Krio — a Creole rooted in the speech of freed slaves — is the everyday lingua franca understood across virtually the whole country.
- Independence Sierra Leone gained independence from Britain on 27 April 1961, with Sir Milton Margai as its first prime minister.
