Three kilometres off Dakar sits Gorée Island, a barren volcanic rock of just 36 hectares that UNESCO calls one of the most powerful symbols of the Atlantic slave trade. For four centuries it was the largest slave-trading centre on the African coast, and its Maison des Esclaves still frames the infamous "Door of No Return." Yet the same passport that today carries Senegalese travellers tells a quieter story of documents and borders: printed bilingually in French and English, biometric since 2007, it is an ECOWAS green book that opens dozens of frontiers across West Africa and beyond.
- Passport The Senegalese passport ranks 76th worldwide on the Henley Passport Index, giving holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 56 destinations.
- Document design Senegal's biometric passport, first issued around 2007 and valid for five years, prints its data page in both French and English under the ECOWAS-standard green cover.
- Currency Senegal does not print its own money: it shares the West African CFA franc (XOF) with seven neighbours, a currency launched on 26 December 1945 and still pegged to the euro at a fixed 655.957 to one.
- Money quirk Although each CFA franc is officially divided into 100 centimes, no centime coins are ever minted, so the smallest subdivision exists only on paper.
