The bent starlight he captured confirmed Einstein's theory of general relativity and turned a little-known physicist into the most famous scientist on Earth - all from a speck in the Gulf of Guinea most travel documents have never heard of. Today the same two-island nation has quietly become a passport curiosity in its own right: it issues one of Africa's least powerful travel documents, runs one of the world's fastest citizenship programs, and pegs its money directly to the euro despite sitting thousands of kilometres from Europe.

• Passport power The Santomean passport ranks around 78th-81st on the Henley Passport Index, giving roughly 58-63 visa-free or visa-on-arrival destinations - and notably none of them are the Schengen Area, the UK or the US.
• Fast citizenship In August 2025 the country launched a citizenship-by-investment programme under Nationality Law No. 07/2022 that can grant a passport in as little as four weeks for a donation from US$90,000, with no requirement to ever set foot on the islands.
• Currency peg The dobra is hard-pegged to the euro at a fixed 24.5 STN per euro - a parity locked in by a 2009 monetary agreement with former colonial power Portugal.
• Redenomination On 1 January 2018 the central bank lopped three zeros off the money, swapping 1,000 old dobras for one new dobra (code STN) to mark its 25th anniversary and tame years of cocoa-economy inflation.
• Relativity proof Arthur Eddington's 29 May 1919 eclipse expedition to Principe produced the photographs that verified Einstein's prediction that gravity bends light - arguably the most consequential science ever done on Santomean soil.
• Equator line On the islet of Ilheu das Rolas you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere: the Equator runs straight across it, marked by a stone monument and a tiled world map.
• Chocolate islands Once nicknamed the 'Chocolate Islands,' Sao Tome was briefly the world's largest cocoa producer in the early 1900s, and cocoa still dominates its exports today.
• Tiny nation With about 235,500 people (2024), it is Africa's second-smallest country by area and the smallest Portuguese-speaking nation on Earth - Portuguese is spoken by roughly 98% of the population.
• Whole-country reserve It became the first nation to have its entire territory designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve, with self-governing Principe being the geologically oldest island in the Gulf of Guinea at around 31 million years.
