Did you know? Saint Lucia
Here is a passport coincidence no other nation can claim: in the same year Saint Lucia raised its own flag as an independent state, 22 February 1979, one of its sons, Sir Arthur Lewis, won the Nobel Prize in Economics. A second islander, poet Derek Walcott, took the Nobel in Literature in 1992. With barely 180,000 people, this single Caribbean island holds the Guinness World Record for the most Nobel laureates per capita on Earth, and Lewis now looks out from the EC$100 banknote that every citizen carries in their wallet.
- Passport power In the 2025 Henley Passport Index the Saint Lucian passport ranked 30th worldwide, opening 148 destinations visa-free or visa-on-arrival, including the entire EU, the UK, Singapore and South Korea.
- Document rules Since 5 August 2025 the Saint Lucian e-passport is issued with a full 10-year validity, up from the previous five, bringing the document in line with the world's longest-lasting travel documents.
- Citizenship Saint Lucia runs one of the world's few citizenship-by-investment programmes, launched in 2015, through which a foreigner can lawfully obtain the passport from US$240,000 while keeping their original nationality.
- Currency Saint Lucians pay in the East Caribbean dollar, which has been locked to the US dollar at exactly EC$2.70 = US$1 since 7 July 1976, one of the longest unbroken currency pegs anywhere in the world.
- Banknotes In 2019 the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank reissued the EC dollar as polymer notes printed in a vertical format, with Saint Lucia's own Nobel economist Sir Arthur Lewis featured on the EC$100 bill.
- Naming Saint Lucia is the only sovereign country on the planet named after a woman, Saint Lucy of Syracuse, after French sailors were reputedly shipwrecked there on her feast day, 13 December.
- History So fiercely contested were its harbours that Saint Lucia changed hands fourteen times between Britain and France, earning the nickname the 'Helen of the West Indies' long before independence in 1979.
- Geography The island is home to Sulphur Springs at Soufriere, marketed worldwide as the only 'drive-in volcano' on Earth, a collapsed crater where visitors roll up by car to bubbling mud pools and steam vents.
