Niger is quietly redrawing the map of identity documents. After breaking with the West African ECOWAS bloc in 2024, the military-led governments of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso formed the Alliance of Sahel States and began rolling out a shared confederal passport, scrapped mobile roaming charges between the three nations, and openly declared their intent to abandon the colonial-era CFA franc for a new currency provisionally called the sira. Yet as of 2026 Nigeriens still carry the euro-pegged CFA franc and a passport ranked 78th in the world, making this one of the most dramatic live experiments in sovereign documentation anywhere on the planet.

• Passport power The Nigerien passport ranks 78th on the Henley Passport Index, giving holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to just 54 destinations worldwide.
• New passport Since leaving ECOWAS in 2024, Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have begun issuing a shared Alliance of Sahel States passport, replacing the regional travel document they previously used.
• Currency Niger uses the West African CFA franc, a currency born in 1945 whose initials originally meant 'franc of the French Colonies of Africa' and which is still printed in France and pegged to the euro at a fixed rate of 655.957.

• Architecture The 27-metre minaret of the Grand Mosque of Agadez, a UNESCO World Heritage site rebuilt in 1844, is considered the tallest mud-brick structure on Earth, its protruding wooden beams doubling as permanent scaffolding.
• Desert landmark The Tree of Tenere, a lone acacia in the Sahara with no neighbour for some 400 kilometres, was the world's most isolated tree and appeared on Michelin maps until a truck driver knocked it down in 1973.
