Liberia is the world's most-travelled flag that almost nobody travels under: as of November 2025 its ship registry topped roughly 300 million gross tons, making this small West African republic the largest flag state on Earth, ahead of Panama and the Marshall Islands. The same nation that lends its star-and-stripes ensign to thousands of foreign tankers issues one of the weaker passports for its own citizens. Founded in 1847 by formerly enslaved Americans, Liberia built its identity documents, currency and even its constitution on that origin story, embedding a citizenship clause that to this day restricts nationality to people of Negro descent.

• Maritime registry Liberia's flag flies over more shipping than any other country on Earth, with its registry reaching nearly 300 million gross tons by November 2025, overtaking Panama as the world's largest flag state.
• Passport power Despite that maritime dominance, the Liberian passport ranked 90th in the 2025 Henley Passport Index, offering visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to only 52 destinations.
• Citizenship Article 27(b) of Liberia's constitution still restricts citizenship by birth or naturalization to persons who are Negroes or of Negro descent, a clause framed by its freed-slave founders as protection against foreign domination.
• Currency The Liberian dollar (LRD) was launched on independence in 1847 as a symbol of nationhood, and Liberia today runs a rare dual-currency economy where US dollars and Liberian dollars circulate side by side as legal tender.
• Split money During the 1990s civil war the currency literally split in two: government-held Monrovia used new Liberty notes while rebel-held areas kept the older bills, so the same banknote's value depended on which side of the front line you stood on.
• New banknotes A fresh Liberian dollar family rolled out from 2021, adding an L$1,000 note and replacing the small L$5 and L$10 notes with coins; older pre-2021 banknotes lost legal-tender status on 31 March 2024.
• Oldest republic Liberia is Africa's oldest republic and the only Black African state never colonized, declaring independence in 1847 with a flag and constitution modeled directly on the United States.
• Capital name The capital Monrovia is named after US President James Monroe, making it one of the only national capitals named after an American head of state.
• Flag of freedom Liberia's flag carries eleven red-and-white stripes for the eleven signers of its Declaration of Independence and a single white star for the first independent republic in Africa, and was designed by a committee of seven women in 1847.
