Open an ordinary Iranian passport and you will find a line many travel documents would never print: the holder is "not entitled to travel to occupied Palestine" — Iran's official term for Israel, a destination formally barred to its own citizens. The booklet itself is a piece of high-tech engineering, packed with a 3D watermark, invisible fibres, laser perforation and a contactless RFID chip storing the bearer's face and fingerprints. More surprising still: Iran does not merely issue these biometric passports, it manufactures and exports e-passport systems to other countries, making the document both a symbol of restriction and a quiet export industry.

• Passport The ordinary Iranian passport carries a printed restriction stating the holder may not travel to "occupied Palestine" — Iran's term for Israel — making it one of the few documents that openly forbids a specific destination.
• Passport power As of January 2026 the Iranian passport ranked around 90th on the Henley Passport Index, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival entry to only about 40-46 destinations worldwide.
• Document tech Iran began issuing biometric e-passports in 2011 and went a step further by exporting its e-passport production systems to other countries, turning identity documents into a national tech export.
• Currency Iranians almost never quote prices in their official currency, the rial — in daily life they use the "toman," an informal unit equal to exactly 10,000 rials, so a shop price and the banknote rarely match.
• Redenomination On 5 October 2025 Iran's parliament approved slicing four zeros off the rial, redefining one new rial as 10,000 old ones and reviving a near-extinct subunit, the qiran.
• Devaluation The rial has lost more than 95% of its value over four decades, sinking from about 71 per US dollar in 1978 to over 1.4 million per dollar by late 2025 — and its official subdivision, the dinar, is now worthless in practice.
• Ancient record The Achaemenid (First Persian) Empire founded by Cyrus the Great holds the Guinness record for the largest empire by share of world population, ruling roughly 44% of all humans alive around 480 BC.
• Human rights The Cyrus Cylinder, a clay barrel inscribed circa 539 BC and now in the British Museum, is widely described as the world's first charter of human rights, proclaiming religious freedom for conquered peoples.
• Migration As of October 2025 Iran hosted roughly 4.5 million Afghans, one of the largest displaced populations sheltered by any single country in the world.
