In 2024 Benin did something almost no nation has dared: it wrote descendants of the transatlantic slave trade into its nationality law. Under Law No. 2024-31, anyone over 18 with sub-Saharan ancestry who can prove their roots through an accredited DNA test, family records or testimony can claim Beninese nationality - a deliberate reckoning by a country whose port of Ouidah once shipped enslaved Africans across the ocean. There is a catch that makes it unique among citizenship documents: this nationality comes without the right to vote or hold office. A passport, yes; full political citizenship, no.
