In 1961 Hurricane Hattie smashed into Belize City and destroyed roughly three-quarters of its homes, exposing the folly of running a country from a low-lying coastal swamp. So Belize did something almost no nation ever does: it built a brand-new capital, Belmopan, from scratch on higher ground inland and moved its government there in 1970, more than a decade before the country even became independent. That storm-driven relocation is why the passports, civil registries and national archives of one of the Americas' youngest states are stamped in a purpose-built city of fewer than 30,000 people rather than its historic port.
- Passport power As of April 2025 the Belizean passport ranked 50th on the Henley Passport Index, giving holders visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 102 countries and territories.
- Passport design Belize adopted the common CARICOM passport design in 2009, so its booklet carries shared security features like intaglio printing, guilloche patterns and a ghost portrait on the biodata page.
- Independence Known as British Honduras until 1973, Belize became independent from Britain only on 21 September 1981, making it one of the last colonies in the Americas to gain statehood.
- Currency The Belize dollar has been locked to the US dollar at exactly BZ$2 = US$1 since the 1970s, a peg written into the Central Bank of Belize Act to guarantee monetary stability.
