In 2009 Antigua and Barbuda did something no other nation has done: it renamed its highest mountain after a sitting foreign head of state. Boggy Peak, the 402-metre summit crowning the island, officially became "Mount Obama" on 4 August 2009 - Barack Obama's 48th birthday - by order of Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer. The gesture split the country's politics, and in 2016 a new cabinet quietly restored the old name. It is a fitting symbol for a twin-island state whose passport, currency and very land ownership all carry surprises that punch far above its 106,000-strong population.

• Passport power In the July 2025 Henley Passport Index, the Antigua and Barbuda passport ranked 26th in the world, granting visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 152 destinations - remarkable reach for one of the Caribbean's smallest nations.
• Citizenship Antigua and Barbuda runs one of the world's oldest Caribbean citizenship-by-investment programmes, and uniquely requires new citizens to physically spend at least five days in the country during their first five years of holding the passport.
• Currency The country doesn't print its own money - it shares the East Caribbean dollar with seven other territories, issued by the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank in Saint Kitts.
• Money peg The East Caribbean dollar has been locked to the US dollar at exactly EC$2.70 to US$1 since 7 July 1976, one of the world's most stable and longest-running fixed exchange rates.
• Banknotes In 2019 the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank reissued its entire banknote family in polymer and in a vertical (portrait) orientation - a design rarity among the world's currencies.
• Land rights On Barbuda, land was traditionally owned communally by all residents with no individual freehold - a century-old system the government moved to dismantle after Hurricane Irma devastated the island in 2017.
• Living history Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2016, is the only continuously working Georgian-era naval dockyard left anywhere on Earth.
• Wildlife record Barbuda's Codrington Lagoon shelters the largest magnificent frigatebird colony in the Western Hemisphere, where more than 5,000 birds roost in the mangroves.
• Independence Antigua and Barbuda only became fully independent from the United Kingdom on 1 November 1981, making it one of the youngest sovereign nations in the Americas.
